How Your Brain Tricks You Into Negative Thinking
Ever find yourself in a negative thinking spiral? Of course you have! It’s human nature. Cognitive distortions aka thinking traps- are basically exaggerated or irrational negative thought patterns that can lead us to believe things that aren’t necessarily true. In this video, Myles Bess breaks down some common thinking traps and some tips on how to manage these this type of thinking. Co-produced with Common Sense Education in collaboration with Center for Digital Thriving at Harvard Graduate School of Education.

**What are cognitive Distortions?
Cognitive distortions aka thinking traps are mental shortcuts that our brains take to help us process the world around us. They tend to be negative and irrational thought patterns- and engaging in this type of thinking is totally common and just the way our brains work. One theory for why we tend to think in this way is that we are programmed for survival, and focusing on worst-case scenario thinking has an evolutionary advantage. But when left unchecked cognitive distortions can contribute to feelings of anxiety and depression.
**What are some common cognitive distortions?
Psychologists have identified many different cognitive distortions, but this video focuses on these five:
All or nothing thinking - with all-or-nothing thinking there’s no room for nuance- things are usually all bad or all good and you aren’t able to see the middle ground. If your thoughts have words like “never” “all” “always” “everyone” or “no one” you might be engaging in all-or-nothing thinking
Labeling - Labeling is when you put a negative label on yourself- I’m an idiot, I’m a loser, etc.
Mind-Reading - Mind-reading is when you think you know what another person is thinking or why they behaved in a certain way. One little action can get totally blown out of proportion.
Negative Filter - Negative filter happens when you only focus on the negative thing and ignore all the positives of a situation.
The Fallacy of Shoulds - The fallacy of shoulds describes when you make up random, arbitrary, or unreasonable rules for yourself. Like, in order to be a good friend I should reply to my friend’s text right away- and if I miss a text then I’m a bad friend.
**What are some tips to help challenge cognitive distortions?
There’s a whole field of therapy dedicated to helping people identify, and process thinking traps as an intervention for things like PTSD, eating disorders, depression, and anxiety. It’s called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (or CBT). However, just recognizing these types of thoughts can go a long way in helping you deal with them. To help you begin to recognize these thoughts- psychologists recommend watching tv and identifying when characters engage in that type of thinking. Once you recognize the thought, you can try to search for evidence that goes against that thought or come up with alternative thoughts to the thought you are having.

I didn’t think that I had ADHD, but I was prescribed guanfacine to help with central tremors, which was then thought to be a result of mild tics/Tourette’s. I started to sleep so much better and it really did help to clear up my thoughts. I strongly suspect that I have Autism and ADHD undiagnosed and that is why my original diagnosis was so wrong. I thought that I had a lot of tics, but now looking back they seem a whole lot more like stims instead. It doesn’t make me any smarter, I just don’t ramble on in class or get sidetracked imagining how a random idea would work as often.

Although I believe Millennials and Gen Z are the soft and entitled generations, I don’t blame them for refusing to serve our crooked and corrupt government. The policies that allowed run away inflation, stagnant wages and runaway government spending that doesn’t remotely benefit the average citizens and especially the younger generation. Why would you put your life on the line to defend a government and system who basically have left you in a crater they created and for you to pay the economic tab of the selfish and reckless Boomer generation. 😒

I would like to point out one thing no one mentions. Universal health care is in no way related to your job, if you get fired or quit your health care does not stop. So if you find better opportunities you can leave. Also it's cheaper for your employer because they don't have to deal with such nonsense.

idk if I do and probably don't have adhd but ever since i started this school year I've been heavily struggling to start to do my work, copy, pay attention, and in some very rare cases, stay in my seat. I'd love to magically fix my attention problems and chronic procrastination but I honestly can't even take a pill. I love when I do feel like I can do stuff and hyperfocus on something a whole day/night long and finish it or stay up organizing schedules or stuff like that, but every single other time I'll procrastinate the smallest of things, even going to the bathroom or eating. it's hard out hereeee

As someone with adhd, adderall just gives my brain the fuel it needs to function normally, with a fully in-tact train of thought. It makes my thoughts clearer, without tv static or random thoughts/noises going on in the background that normally make it impossible to focus. Whenever I want to do something now, I just… do it. I don’t have to spend half an hour mentally preparing, I don’t get distracted by something else before starting, and I’m not devastated or exhausted afterwards. I do not recommend taking it if you don’t have adhd as it’s kinda sorta meth, but if your brain has the same problem mine does it’s the keys to the ignition. Take only if you are prescribed, and only as prescribed. I can definitely see how this can be dangerous if you take too much too fast, even with adhd

I am an ex dexamphetamine user. The time I used/abused it have been the most educational/ productive years of my life. For over 3 years I used it daily. I have mastered two professions in that time and build up a company. I still benefit from that today (it was over 15 years ago). I quit because I thought it was difficult to slow down my life and living at that speed started to have other negative side effects (I was a workaholic, caught up in work and had nothing else in my life). So I quit by myself, took a bit of a sabbatical and do things at a more normal tempo since then. Things are more messy and chaotic now. My doctor said I could be tested for ADHD because of this story, she thinks I might have it. But I rather do the things like I do now. Yes I might work better and have fantastic professional results with some sort of medication. But I don’t want to obsess over my work more than I already do. Much rather balance things out and spend a lot of time with my kids.

Personally the browser tab metaphor paints the wrong picture for me. It’s more like my computer takes one browser tab at a time. If I need to go to a different browser tab. I have to go in a backup file system and sort to find that other tab. It’s a lack of working memory. I “remember” everything, but something would have to trigger that memory for me to react. I don’t juggle thoughts, I zip through them fast and just go from one to the next.

Honestly this is sooo interesting! I was in complete denial that I had combined type, but my thoughts were so hard to control and I felt powerless. I tried the medication and the first time I freaked out. Because I felt like I was high. Everything in my head was quiet and I could just *be*. Listen to music. Actually LISTEN instead of it being a secondary back drop to my world. That’s how I knew I had ADHD

If you are taking this medication and end up with anxiety that’s worse and have trouble sleeping it most likely isn’t for you.

I have adhd and don’t take meds and I know people with adhd who do take meds. Not being medicated is the best decision I’ve made in my life. This comment section is like a “take pills it’s heaven” thread. I’m not saying it doesn’t help, but guys, please acknowledge that you are addicted to it. You can’t function without it and after the dose ends, you feel like a zombie… I have come to terms with the fact that my brain just works differently, I don’t want to be like other normal people, I want to be myself 100% of the time and with meds I feel like people lose themselves. Be creative, start a business, play sports, draw, create something. You are gifted, don’t fall into the trap of being “normal” or “more easily in focus”. Don’t throw your life away on pills please.
